Memorial Day

Memorial Day used to be a day off. A time to plan a vacation, go for a hike or a picnic. Now I find it is becoming more a time of refection. In the last year we lost two more of our classmates and I still think we are too young for this to happen to us. I would hope we could all last for a 100 years on this space we call earth. Realizing all of us becoming centurions probably isn't part of the plan (whatever the plan is). It is my humble opinion that we should tell those we love how much we love them daily and that we should never let a day go by that we don't show and share our love. We never know when the opportunity to do this will be gone.

Have a wonderful Memorial Day.

May we all give more than we take and may we graciously take what others are willing to give.

Don't Blink

While listening to the Kenny Chesney song "Don't Blink" it occurred to me that most of us will be turning 54 this year. It seems like yesterday we were singing the school song at a football game and cheering for the maroon and grey. Who would have ever thought we would reach this age so soon. It truly does feel like a "blink"!

Here's hoping the next 54 years will take longer to go by than the first.

Jerry L. McCleary

Jerry L. McCleary 1935 ~ 2009 Jerry L. McCleary passed away peacefully on January 9, 2009, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. His family and loved ones were by his side. He was born in Murray, Utah on September 28, 1935 to William F. and Delsa C. McCleary. He was raised in Midvale, Utah and graduated from Jordan High School in 1953. While at Jordan he was an All-State basketball player, captain of the 1953 state championship team and named the state's most valuable player. Jerry married his high school sweetheart, Shirla Ann Jones, of South Jordan, UT in 1954 in the Salt Lake Temple. He attended the University of Utah from 1953 to 1957 on a basketball scholarship. "Jumpin' Jerry" was a starter on the varsity team for three years. Forever a "Utah Man," just as sure as the "U" would blink on the mountain following a Utah victory, so would Jerry wear his red blazer to church the following Sunday. After his collegiate career, Jerry continued playing basketball for many years in the county recreation program achieving much success and recognition. Jerry had a 32 year career in public education as a teacher, coach, and administrator in the Jordan School District. He coached his Jordan High basketball teams to a state title and 4th place finish in 1963 and 1968, respectively. As an administrator, he worked as principal of Jordan High School and in 1981 was named Principal to open the new West Jordan High School. Upon retirement, the school honored its first principal by naming the football field, "McCleary Field." Jerry was a faithful member of the LDS church, serving in various callings including Bishop's Counselor, Stake High Council member, Bishop and Temple Sealer. He served as the Mission President of the Florida, Fort Lauderdale Mission from 1993 to 1996 and opened and presided over the Johannesburg, South Africa MTC from 2003 to 2004. Besides family and basketball, Jerry's other passions were slow-pitch softball and golf. He was named to the Utah Slow-Pitch Softball Hall of Fame after obtaining numerous awards while playing many years for Priced Rite Trophies. After his softball playing days, golf became his favorite pastime and his clubs accompanied him everywhere he went. He loved to play new golf courses wherever he traveled. Jerry's life was centered around teaching, helping and working with the youth. He spent many hours as a teacher, coach and administrator loving, helping and supporting the students. As a mission president, he dearly loved and cared for his missionaries in the Florida, Fort Lauderdale mission. His love for the Elders and Sisters who entered the South Africa MTC touched hearts of many who had never felt such love before. He loved the youth when he served in the Branch Presidency of the singles ward and as a Bishop of the University of Utah Married Students Ward where he was known as "Grandpa Bishop." He is survived by his wife, Shirla; children, Larry (Cheryl), Ann Clover (Jim), Brian (Sandi), Robert (Trina) and Tara Marshall (Rob); brother, Kent (Sharla), two sisters-in-law, Arlene McCleary and Jane Sumner; 26 grand children and 11 great-grand children. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Bill and Donald (Kay). The family would like to express gratitude to the IHC Hospice nurses and the staff at Garden Terrace for their tender and loving care during the last weeks of his life. Funeral services will be Wednesday January 14, 2009 at 11a.m. in the Butler Stake Center located at 7035 Nutree Drive (3255 East). A viewing will be held Tuesday, January 13, 2009 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Goff Mortuary, located at 8090 S. Sid Lawrence Stabbed

Sid Lawrence is recovering at home in Tooele from multiple stab wounds following an apparent random murder attempt in a church rest room near the end of Trudie's company Christmas Party on December 13, 2008.

Police have no suspects or motive; however, Sid was able to help them produce a drawing of the attacker. He described a Hispanic male in his 20's about 5'8" to 5'10", with a round face, a mole on his right cheek, brown eyes and crew cut hair.

The attack started in a restroom at St. Marquerite's Catholic Church, following a Christmas Party held by Mountain West Medical Center. While in the restroom he was hit in the back by the man who apparently had been sitting in a stall, waiting for anyone he could turn into his victim.

The assailant put his hand over Sid's mouth so he couldn't scream pulling him away from the urinal and stabbed him twice. Sid said, "I didn't know what happened at the time I just felt the pain and went to the floor. I was on my back and he was straddling me, then he shanked me again, and when he pulled out the knife, that's when I saw it, and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Then he came down and knifed me again and I realized then he was going to kill me. He tried to knife me again and I deflected it with my hand and it came down and strafed my neck. He came back to knife me again, so I put my hand up to block and he ran the knife right through my hand. I realized if I didn't grab the shank I was going to be dead, so I clutched the blade of the knife, as he tried to jerk it loose, back and forth, and he was cutting the heck out of my left hand, but I knew I couldn't let go. While we were struggling, I gored his eyes with my fingers and grabbed his testicles and squeezed as hard as I could while still holding on to his knife, that's when he jumped up off of me and ran out."

There were about 30 party-goers who still remained at the church who saw the man bolt through the gymnasium where the event was held, but responding police officers could not find him. Sid, bleeding heavily, staggered out of the bathroom calling for help and collapsed on the gym floor. Due to the weather they were unable to life-flight him out so he was taken to Mountain West Hospital by ambulance.

Sid was extremely lucky despite multiple deep wounds the knife somehow missed his spleen and kidney by a quarter of an inch.

Janet Price emailed me the article which was in his work's weekly newsletter. I have provided a Reader's Digest Version. If you would like a copy of the newsletter let me know and I will e-mail it out to you.
